Power Portraits: Vincent Namatjira

Inspired by Vincent Namatjira’s portraits of important historical figures, children - who are usually denied of any real power or influence – can place themselves within a virtual portrait and select ‘power icons’ such as crowns.

A Boat to Carry Your Dreams: Sadik Kwaish Alfraji

This hands-on activity is inspired by a letter that the artist received from his nephew in Baghdad, featuring a drawing of a boat with the words ‘I wish my letter takes me to you’. Children can make their own wish, write or draw it on paper and fold it into a boat to carry their dreams.

Illuminate: Nona Garcia

Illuminate invites children to form patters and designs by rearranging a selection of X-ray images. Images of sea coral and animal bones symbolise the impermanent, precious nature of life.

Uncovered Library: Joyce Ho

This interactive library features many books covered in paper which hide their titles and cover illustrations. Kids can select a book and find a place to read it in one of the small stage sets. When they have finished, they can reflect on the book, give it a new title and cover design.

The Arkono Project: Pauline Kimei Anis

This fun activity is inspired by the men and women of Bougainville who transform shells into beads used for ceremonial practices. Children can make a necklace using beads they have made from paper and coloured pencils.

The Legend of the Rainbow Stag: Jakkai Siributr

Inspired by his mother’s passion for children’s literature, artist Jakkai Siributr shares one of her stories which is brought to life in animation.  Kids can create their own personalised version of the animation by embellishing a stag template and scanning the image.

Mauri: Jeff Smith

This immersive digital environment uses projectors to create an underwater world reflecting the sights and sounds of a fish trap.  Kids can interact with schools of animated fish that respond to their movements.

Purple Reign: Gary Carsley

Artist Gary Carsley has created a secret garden for children and families overflowing with images of the iconic purple bloom, inspired by the Queensland Art Gallery’s much-loved painting ‘Under the jacaranda’ (1903).
