Nancy Kunoth Petyarre: Arnkerrthe

Mitchell Fine Art

Arnkerrthe is a stunning aboriginal art exhibition by Nancy Kunoth Petyarre, showing at Mitchell Fine Art from February 27 to March 23.

Nancy Kunoth Petyarre, an Anmatyerre women and senior artist, was one of the acclaimed seven Petyarre sisters; all internationally renowned indigenous artists.

Born in 1938 near Utopia in Central Australia, Nancy did not start painting until she was in her 40s, with no formal education and little knowledge of Western art.

This exciting exhibition showcases the various styles and stories for which Nancy was known. Many of her art works depict Arnkerrthe, the Mountain Devil Lizard, with the artist’s delicate dotting replicating the lizard’s skin.

Other works in this exhibition include Awelye or Body Painting, art works featuring Dreaming designs women paint onto their bodies for ceremonial purposes.

When the artist passed away in 2009, her death saw the passing of both a talented artist and cultural custodian of the Anmatyerre people. This exhibition pays homage to one of Central Australia’s most skilled and charismatic artists.

Need to know – A Director’s Talk will be held in the gallery on Saturday, March 2 from 2pm.
