Next time you’re looking for a free – and totally unforgettable! – day out for the whole family, look no further than Queensland Museum.

With a diverse range of free experiences spread across three levels, visitors of all ages are bound to be lost in the wonder of all there is to explore. While the museum enjoys a constantly changing line-up of exhibitions, some of the current free attractions include:

Queensland Museum

Yidaki: Didjeridu and the Sound of Australia

Open until March 29, Yidaki is an immersive experience where visitors can look at a range of didjeridus, plus hear and feel the sound of these iconic instruments. The whole experience serves to transport participants to the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land – home of the Yolngu people and yidaki master Djalu Gurruwiwi.

Queensland Museum

Anzac Legacy Gallery

Focusing on the legacies of the First World War and how they shaped modern-day Queensland, this fascinating exhibition combines historical artefacts with cutting-edge multimedia interactives. A real highlight of the gallery is one of Australia’s (and the world’s!) most significant war relics – the A7V Sturmpanzerwagen armoured assault vehicle, Mephisto.

Queensland Museum

Discovery Centre

The refurbished Discovery Centre is an absolute treasure trove for inquisitive minds both young and old. Home to thousands of objects, animals and fossils (including live snakes, spiders, and giant cockroaches!), this fascinating centre is perfect for those wanting to satisfy their curiosity about a range of subjects including zoology, history, geography, and even taxidermy.

Queensland Museum

Wild State

Queensland has more animal species than anywhere else in Australia, so it’s only fitting that an entire exhibition has been dedicated to this ‘wild’ state. A wander through this gallery will take you on a journey through five breathtaking environments – the arid outback, the bush, the rainforest, the coast, and the ocean. Highlighting the extreme beauty, yet fragile state of each environment, Wild State also explores the need to protect this precious natural world for future generations.

Nice to know – Queensland Museum is also home to a range of ticketed exhibitions and special events.

Need to know – QM is open daily from 9.30am-5pm and is easily accessible by public transport, while there is a public carpark directly below the museum.
