Queensland Government House will be opening its stately gates for the public to explore and take a tour on Saturday Jun 1.

This is a unique and fantastic opportunity to peek behind the doors of the Governor's official residence and explore the estate's picturesque, heritage-listed gardens.

Fernberg is a Queensland landmark that has been the home and workplace of Governors since 1910, as a unique combination of private residence, busy office and symbol of the State’s prestige. This year’s Open Day celebrates the 160th anniversary of Queensland Day, marking the official separation from New South Wales as an independent colony on 6 June 1859.

The rooms of the heritage listed house will be open for self-guided tours including the impressive state rooms where royalty has been received and even dined.

Visitors will also get the chance to capture a photograph on the red carpet in front of the Royal Crest in the Investiture Room where Australian Bravery Awards and Honours are presented to Queensland recipients every year.

The grounds of Fernberg will be open from midday to 4pm, providing an opportunity to stroll through the 14 hectares of gardens and native bushland on the estate. Guided tours of the gardens will be available at 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm to provide details of the horticulture, botanically significant trees and plants, along with insights into how the horticulture team keeps the precinct in perfect presentation and provides sustainable habitat for native animals and flora.

To make the most of the Open Day, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC encourages families to walk around the grounds, bring a picnic lunch and rug to relax on the grass and listen to music provided by the Australian Army Band Brisbane. Light refreshments will be available to purchase from food and drink vendors on site.

Whilst there, look out for Vice Regal Dog Gavel, who will also amble the grounds throughout the day meeting guests.

Nice to know - This year’s Open Day celebrates the 160th anniversary of Queensland Day, marking the official separation from New South Wales as an independent colony on 6 June 1859. As part of the ‘show your maroon’ campaign to celebrate Queensland Day, the brilliant white walls of Government House will be bathed in maroon light each evening. The first night of the official maroon switch on will be Saturday 1 June t and will be repeated each evening from dusk until Monday 10 June  2019.

Need to know - The event is free and no tickets or pre-booking is required. Entry is via the Main Gate at 168 Fernberg Road, Paddington or gates near Norman Buchan Park off Baroona Road. Parking is available on streets surrounding the Estate.
