Kasina

Morningside

KASINA HAS CLOSED AND RE-OPENED AS A FILIPINO RESTAURANT AND AWAITS A NEW REVIEW.

Charming, rustic, Balkan restaurant Kasina brings an authentic and delectable taste of Eastern Europe to Morningside.

The next best thing to a trip overseas, Kasina is well-worth a visit, for the minute you step inside, you'll forget you are in Brisbane.

Owned and run by Brisbane hospitality stalwart Dragan Sestic* together with his wide Marija and family, Kasina is divided into two sections (the building used to be a theatre restaurant). Diners can take a seat at carved wooden tables and benches in the front overlooking the street or out back in a vine-clad, candle-lit dining room that resembles the outdoors of so many restaurants in the Adriatic region.

The menu, with everything prepared fresh from scratch, features the best traditional dishes from the former Yugoslavia through to Bulgaria, with wines to match and liqueurs such as Arak.

Small plates, all designed to share, include the must-try Przen Paprike (roasted peppers, with feta burnt onion and fried bread); Peksimeti (Balkan fried dough-balls with ajvar, kackavalj cheese, and kajmak cheese); Baked Cauliflower with smoked buttermilk, avruga caviar and fermented honey; or Fried Squid with garlic aioli, parsley and lemon.

Meanwhile, large plates include Sarma (stuffed cabbage leaves with beef and rice, polenta and sour cream); Muckalica (beef or pork roasted goulash with chilli and burnt bread); Hot Smoked Trout with green vegetables, black garlic and barley or Karadjordjeva Šnizla (rolled pork steak, stuffed with kajmak, breaded and fried, with garlic potato and tzatziki).

There are also traditional Balkan Platters such as cured meats and cheese or the hearty Mixed Grill (Pan-seared smoked sausages, ćevapi, pljeskavica and chicken skewers served with potato, charred bread and kupus salad), while desserts include Plazma Torta (traditional Balkan cake with chantilly cream) and Tufahija (poached apple, walnut and rakija cream).

Can't decide? Then order the 6-course set menu where you'll be treated to the chef's choice with a taste of the best Kasina dishes.

Good to know - *Dragan is also the owner of Dramanti Roastery in Morningside and Wynnum.

Need to know - There is limited on-street parking outside the restaurant, which is located on the inbound side of Wynnum Rd.
