Qld Pops: NYE Masquerade Gala Concert
Concert Hall, QPAC
Say goodbye to 2020 in style at the Queensland Pops' glamorous New Year’s Eve Masquerade Gala Concert at QPAC.
Queensland Pops Orchestra is thrilled to return to QPAC's Concert Hall for the 36th consecutive year, to celebrate the end of this unforgettable year and to light a fuse of excitement as the countdown to 2021 begins.
Maestro Patrick Pickett CSM has created a concert with a ‘Carnival of Venice’ atmosphere, filled with virtuosity, colour and movement. Joining Patrick and the orchestra is a stellar cast of exceptional and gifted musicians including internationally renowned Tenor Kang Wang, Soprano Katie Stenzel, Violinist Cherin Lee, and the superb Voices of Birralee.
Originally from China, Kang Wang is the son of two renowned opera singers. This young, lyric tenor received an International Artist Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and a Master of Music from Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. He is a quickly becoming one of the most sought-after tenors in the opera world.
Dynamic coloratura soprano, Katie Stenzel, graduated with a Bachelor of Music from QUT and went on to complete her Master of Music Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Described by Limelight Magazine as possessing “powerful and perfectly controlled upper range”, the talented Queenslander has become a regular on the Pops New Year's Eve program with her vivacious presentation of classical and popular songs.
Completing the triptych of guest solo artists is young violin virtuoso Cherin Lee, who has regularly graced the Pops' stage since her exciting debut with the orchestra at age 14. After leaving Somerville House, Cherin was offered a place at Juilliard in the US (which she has deferred), and is now studying at Harvard. With an international performing career beckoning, Cherin will return to Brisbane to perform the third movement of the legendary Beethoven Violin Concerto.
Also returning to the Pops' stage for the New Year's Eve Gala concerts is the ever-talented Voices of Birralee. Always an audience favourite, the internationally-renowned Queensland ensemble is a treat for the ears with its soaring harmonies and breathtaking performances.
As has become the tradition, there will be two concert performances: 6pm and 10pm. Following the 10pm show, concert-goers can head up to the QPAC rooftop to hear Piper Bruce Grice pipe in the New Year at an exclusive black-tie function, where guests will sip champagne and enjoy nibbles as they cheer on the new year.
