Zullaz Bar & Eating Place
Burleigh Heads
ZULLAZ BAR & EATING PLACE HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
Zullaz Bar & Eating Place is the veteran of the happening Burleigh dining scene, an ambient arcade hideaway serving up cocktails, wine and food with a Polynesian flavour.
Tables spill out into the quaint 1960s thoroughfare while inside the cosy restaurant is a stunning rustic feature wall of a barn in the nearby Tallebudgera Valley.
Owner Jasmine, who is of Polynesian descent started Zullaz in 2003 and these days her parents have come on board, with her mother helping to prepare the aromatic and exotic dishes made from hand-ground spices and home-made sauces that are Zullaz’s signature.
The entire menu is made up of original recipes and features an abundance of seafood in dishes like: Szechuan fish (John Dory with in-house ground Szechuan salt), Chenola spiced prawns, Kaffir Lime and Chilli Calamari and NZ Cajun-spiced salmon with hand-cut Szechuan chips.
Otherwise heavenly handmade vegetarian samosas, slow-cooked chicken with coriander and coconut and the signature Jamaican Goat Curry (goat is sourced locally from a goat farm at the base of Mt Tamborine and slow-cooked for 8 hours) come highly recommended.
If it’s all too hard to decide there are tasting platters (Zullaz platter for 2 or 4) and tapas to enjoy, accompanied by craft beer, fine wine by the glass or fragrant cocktails such as lemongrass and ginger martini, mint julep (based on wood-fired bourbon) and classic dessert types like Brandy Alexander.
Nice to know: Zullaz also hosts open mic nights and doco nights (on anything from fashion to orang-utans). Check their Facebook page for details. A Zullaz cookbook is also in the offing.
Need to know: All main meals are gluten and dairy free. *The kitchen stays open until 11.45 on weekends and by demand during the week.
