Kürtősh

West End

Sitting at the entrance to West Village, European-inspired bakery Kürtősh is well-known for its famous kürtőskalács - a Hungarian pastry also known as a chimney cake due to its cylindrical shape.

Kurtosh Bakery, West End

Sold as street food from carts all over Hungary, these flaky, sweet treats are made to order while you wait, with a giant rolling pin and a ribbon of dough that's hand-stretched and then coiled around the rolling bin before it's baked to golden perfection - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Customers can choose to have it sprinkled with cinnamon, coconut, walnut, pistachio, roasted hazelnut, and almond or filled with Nutella.

The bakery also offers a range of delicious slices/slab cakes such as Mum's chocolate cake, baked cheesecake, sticky apple and cinnamon tea cake, or red velvet cake with cherries and chocolate mousse, which are sold by weight rather than size. Have a sliver of cake, a piece as big as your hand, or buy the whole 9-inch slab to take home.

Plus, there's freshly-baked cookies - chocolate fudge, peanut butter, salted tahini and choc chip, or chocolate and whisky 'Earthquake' cookies - as well as a selection of sweet and savoury pastries including raspberry croissants, chocolate twists, French palmiers, and bite-sized burekas

There's plenty of seating available inside the bakery cafe and outside, where you can savour your treat while enjoying a signature coffee blend created exclusively for Kürtősh by Seven Miles Coffee Roasters or pot of herbal tea (supplied by Tea Craft).

Nice to know - Kürtősh West Village is the first Queensland store for the family business that started when owner, Ben Haikin, and his brother travelled to Hungary to learn the art of making kürtőskalács. They returned with a 70 year old recipe that was courtesy of a Hungarian man who custom-built ovens in the local cafes; now served across Australia as the bakery's most coveted confection.
