Moggill Conservation Park

Anstead

Moggill Conservation Park is a sprawling 500 ha bush reserve tucked away in Anstead, with a network of pathways and trails open to hikers, dogs on leashes, horses and mountain bikes.

A bit of a local secret, the reserve, which is only half an hour from the CBD, is well worth a trip.

Moggill Conservation Park

Just off Mt Crosby Rd, on Chalcot Rd is a small car park and here is one of the best places to enter the park and start the trail. A short way from the entrance, the track splits into two - Centre Road or Nursery Break.

Moggill Conservation Park

Nursery Break leads to the Devil's Break trail, which involves some steep hills to climb and a good level of fitness, takes roughly an hour and a half to the peak, returning back down via Central Road. (Alternatively you can take Central Road both ways for an easier walk).

The shady walk is well sign-posted and gradually makes its way to a peak where there are glimpses to be had of Brisbane City in the distance.

As you reach the upper sections of the ridge, the path is lined with beautiful 'grass trees' (Xanthorrhoea) and banks of wild flowers which start to bloom in late winter.

Near the tip of the ridge, The Devils Break path merges with Centre Road and, after a short distance, there is the option to head back downhill via Centre Road (path to the left) or take Tower Break to the right. This will take you further up the hill to where there are phone towers and more views of Brisbane, back towards Ipswich.

From Tower Break Rd, the path loops around to an intersection with other trails - to return to Central Road (the way back down to the car park), head left on Powerline Road until it rejoins. Taking this loop will add, roughly, half an hour to the walk.

And, if you'd prefer not to do the steeper trail (Devil's Break), take Central Road to the top, do the Tower Break and Powerline Rd circuit, and return again via Central Road.

Need to know - It is recommended that walkers wear enclosed shoes with grip, preferably hiking boots, carry their own water and ensure that dogs remain on leash at all times.

Tip - Whilst in the area, why not stop by the charming country style cafe The Reserve at Anstead for a pre-walk breakfast or post-walk lunch. The cafe is a couple of minute's drive from the Chalcot Road car park.
