Morning After

West End

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Morning After is an oasis of contemporary cool on Vulture St West End – an uber chic breakfast and brunch café that, as its name suggests, is the ideal place to revive after a night out or make a great start to the day.

Located under The Glass Factory, Morning After makes the most of its corner position to welcome breezes through its bifold windows and doors.

Morning After West End

The stunning light-filled interior features things of stone, pale wood and grass-green, with a long community table in the centre, green felt wall bench, hanging ferns, a coffee bar and white circular booth that takes pride of place in the centre. Outdoors there’s also a smattering of seating and a water bowl for dogs accompanying their owners.

Morning After West End

Attention to detail rules here at Morning After and is evident in everything from the menu to the slick attentive waiters, the offer of 2 different brands of coffee (5 Senses from Melbourne or Uncle Joe’s from the Gold Coast) to the chic grey aprons with leather straps worn by staff, the locally sourced rooftop Bee One Third honey down to the acknowledgement of a nutritionist’s input on the menu.

Breakfast (Morning) is served all day every day and options start with the light - think Smashed Avo on multigrain with garden peas, buffalo ricotta and lime; (The..Unrefined from Brisbane) Granola with yoghurt, rosewater jelly, apple and bee one honey; MaMuffin, sausage, egg, American cheese, hash brown and tomato relish.

Moving on to something more substantial there’s Fresh sand Crab Omelette; Buttermilk, Ricotta Hotcakes with lime marscapone, stone fruit, maple and apple, Eggs benedict with cotechino (cured meat), spinach and hollandaise, Sweet Corn Pakora with fried egg, haloumi, smoked corn, avo and watercress and even a breakfast Carbonara – papadelle, field mushrooms, 63 degree hens eggs, guanciale and pecorino romano.

A host of add-on extras are also available including smoked bacon, sausage patty, roasted mushrooms, marinated tofu, spinach, smoked salmon, feta and oregano chips.

From 11.30-2.30 the After menu kicks in and comprises dishes like Tempura Barramundi taco, Slow Roasted lamb Shoulder Salad, Cheeseburger and Huon Salmon Fillet with miso glaze. There is also a range of daily sandwiches on the Specials board.

On Sundays only punters can rock up for ‘Yiro Sunday’, paying homage to owner Yianni’s Greek heritage with three types of delicious Yiros available: Slow Cooked Chicken or Lamb with parsley, onion, mustard mayo and chips or Tempura Prawns with coriander, mint and kewpie mayo.

With Morning After being fully licensed, diners get to enjoy a hair of the dog or just a nice glass of boutique wine, beer or cider any time of day with their meals.

On the curated wine list are options (most by the glass as well as bottle) like Lost Turtle Pinot Noir, Blackbilly gsm, Tellurain Rose or Pacha Mama Chardonnay while Prosecco is available by the glass and Jacquart champagne by the bottle.

Beers include Little Creatures Pale Ale, Peroni or Volkan Pilsner, cider is Pegan pear and a range of spirits are also available (ask the waiter).

For non-drinkers there’s plenty of great choices on the go – Handcrafted Elixirs (Carrot, Vanilla, Green or Peanut Butter 8), cool drinks such as Strange Love ginger beer, Apple Greet Tea and Myrtle, Emma and Tom’s or San Pellegrino Sparkling.

Naturally, coffee (Uncle Joe’s or 5 Senses) is a serious consideration at Morning After and can be ordered with milk, Short or Long black, by Batch Brew or Pour Over or Chai Boy. Tea meanwhile is specialty tea by Cartel and comes as a choice of Cartel Grey, Tung Ting Green, Lemon Lift, Tea Master Breakfast or Aromatherapy in a Cup.

Nice to know – On the counter are a batch of delicious fresh-baked pastries including croissants to have in or take away.

Note that some menu items may have changed since this review.
