Two Wheels And A Handlebar
An Italian chef, a sunny deck and the best budget breakfast and lunch in Brisbane are found at Milton gem Two Wheels and a Handlebar.
From its digs in an old converted garage on Railway Tce, this bicycle themed rustic cafe offers fine dining at budget prices to lucky Milton workers, commuters and anyone else fortunate enough to stumble across it.
Everything is handmade from scratch at Two Wheels, from the quirky bicycle part adorned deck and furniture to the divine Italian bread and pastries. The latter are baked daily on site by Paolo, part owner (with charming partner Rene) and who hails from Michelin star chef Giorgio Locatelli’s London restaurant Locanda Locatelli and Brisbane restaurants Urbane and Alchemy.
Breakfast and lunch menus change daily according to what fresh produce is available, with a $5 light breakfast (think just-baked focaccia with poached egg, brioche nutella or Italian donut) available every day and a substantial breakfast on weekends only.
The latter is no ordinary breakfast menu, with dishes you’d expect to find in a 5 star London hotel rather than a rustic recycled garage in the back streets of Milton, such as confit duck leg with poached duck egg, spinach, fresh baked crusty bread and sauté spinach (at just $14) or house made muesli with pineapple and mango jelly and buffalo yoghurt.
Lunch, available on weekdays is also a treat, with $10 offerings such as caprese or ocean trout and asparagus salad, honey glazed pork leg and Nonna’s coleslaw sandwich and the amazing slow cooked beef rib, roast black cabbage and black farmers bread.
Coffee here is organic fair trade from boutique Melbourne's Red Star roastery, tea is organic, chai tea is made fresh and must try in summer are the traditional Thai fruity shakes, made with fresh fruit, home made lime syrup, ice, water and optional fresh mint.
Need to know: With a bicycle shop next door there’s plenty of room for cyclists to park their bikes and plans for a council bike rack out front. A bee hive is planned for the rooftop so soon even the honey will be made onsite.
