Mrs Brown's Bar & Kitchen
Newstead
Mrs Brown's Bar & Kitchen is Newstead's funky neighbourhood bar and kitchen, serving top-notch bar snacks and share plates alongside local craft beer, fine wine and top shelf spirits.
Located on the corner of Commercial Road and Kyabra Street, Mrs Brown's is the brainchild of Teneriffe couple Tarryn and Ben Brown, who wanted to create a vibrant communal atmosphere.
Housed in a warehouse, formerly Blue Sky Coffee, Mrs Brown's is a stunning, semi-industrial space. Named after the owner's dog, Charlie Brown, a mural of their much-loved pet greets customers as they enter. High ceilings and timber floors are highlighted with lots of greenery; while a standout feature is the marble bar bought at Jo-Jo's closing down auction.
The mouth-watering menu, created by Head Chef Adam Marino (previously of Longtime and Spirit House), includes bar snacks like KFC (Korean fried cauliflower tossed in Korean spices), chicken and cheese spring rolls, prawn dumplings, prawn rolls (beer battered prawns, lettuce and sriracha mayo on milk buns) and the highly-recommended Indian paratha bread tacos topped with roasted pork, kimchi and Japanese mayo, pulled lamb, eggplant relish, cucumber and tzatziki, or grilled swordfish, radish, slaw and tomato chilli salsa.
Main dishes, designed to share, range from Mrs Brown's Dirty Bird rotisserie chicken (rubbed with 10 secret spices), slow roasted lamb shoulder (cooked in garlic, thyme and lemon) and crispy skinned braised pork belly.
Must-do desserts include Mrs Brown's Marble Brownie - dark chocolate brownie topped with cream cheese - and Mrs Brown's signature gelato handmade by La Macelleria.
Drink wise, there are 24 taps of beer, cider and ginger beer, an extensive wine list and cocktails available by the glass or jug; from Aperol Spritzes and Espresso Martinis to Acapulco Tea, Granny Apple Slaps and Peach A-Peels - Carpano dry vermouth, J.C. peach liqueur and lemon juice.
Nice to know - Mr Brown's is child-friendly. Kids can order roast chicken dinners or mini pizzas from Gianni's.
