Genkotsu Ramen
Toowong
Genkotsu Ramen is a hidden gem - an authentic little ramen house found tucked away at the end of a Toowong shopping arcade.
Look for Clements arcade which opens onto Sherwood St by the corner of Jephson St and head down the dim lit walkway to the end where Genkotsu Ramen signals its existence with a red curtain over a sliding door.
Step inside to a bustling air-con dining room with faux red brick walls, Asian pop music, rustic communal tables and bar counters and dark wood benches, where customers’ heads are bowed down over their bowls, devouring the delicious ramen.
Keeping it simple, the menu, which is almost all devoted to ramen, is propped on the tables and ordering (cash only) is done at the cash register.
Not only is Genkotsu the real deal, everything here is top value, with most of the hearty ramen bowls coming in at around $10* - Originals such as Shio (salt), Shoyu (soy), Misu and Gyokai (fish) and Specials including Karaage, Black Garlic and Chashui. And for a few dollars more diners can enjoy a Premium ramen like Soft Shell Crab or Prawn.
Meanwhile Toppings available include Dried Seaweed, Takana Pickles, Bamboo Shoots, Pork Chashu and Original Chilli Paste.
To accompany there’s Mini Rice Dishes such as Teriyaki Chicken, Kara (hot) Miso and Mentaiko (cod roe) or Yuzu Tuna Rice and Sides of Chuka Wakame (seaweed salad), Spring Rolls, Gyoza, Prawn and Chicken Karaage and Takoyaki.
Good to know – For those with tot in tow there’s a high chair and cutesy kids plates available.
