THIS EVENT IS NOW IN THE PAST. FOR MORE GREAT THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN AND AROUND BRISBANE, PLEASE HEAD TO OUR WHAT'S ON PAGE HERE

From steam train rides and animal tours to old-fashioned kids games, check out five of SEQ's best cultural and historic activities for kids this September-October 2020 school holiday:

Step back in time with a steam train ride to historic Swanbank Station, where there's a children's playground and heritage railway themed gifts for sale. You'll travel on board an immaculate vintage wooden carriage or vintage dining car and discover the rich mining history of the Ipswich area as you go past ruins of old mines and equipment from days gone by. A food van will be in operation on the ride days.  Tickets are limited due to social distancing requirements so book early to avoid disappointment. Trains will depart on September 19, 26 & 27 at 9am, 11am and 1pm

With these guided VIP Walking Tours through Ipswich Nature Centre, kids will learn about the important work the Centre staff do to support the Bilbies, discover what goes into caring for local wildlife, meet lovable barnyard animals; see the keepers doing their rounds; and get to know all the local residents of the Ipswich Nature Centre by name. Pre-booked 1.5 hour tours will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9am and 11am during the school holidays, costing $12 for adults and $8 for children

The Ipswich Art Gallery is home to this free hands-on exhibition and experimental activities where kids can learn whilst having fun. Design and build your very own flying creation to test in the Wind Tubes. See your creation take flight and soar to the ceiling, and defy gravity by hovering high overhead… or just fall to the floor. It’s all about air and invention, with a little bit of mid-air mayhem. A variety of materials from paper cups to polystyrene balls, streamers, and pipe cleaners are provided

Take a fascinating trip back into the past with real life activity displays and old-fashioned games at this heritage centre on Sunday September 27th. Watch blacksmiths working, observe home life in a kitchen, washing clothes with a washboard and an old classroom set up and check out a WWII Jeep and communication station. Kids can play games like skipping, tug of war, hopscotch, knuckles, croquet and quoits and try craft like making a doll from a dolly peg and making a picture of a settlers hut with glue, bark and grass. Or see how much coal you can shovel in the coal shovelling competition. Bookings are essential!

Run by Sip ‘n’ Dip Ipswich, these classes will keep the kids busy for a few hours and inspire them to be more creative. The classes range for cupcake decorating to making dream catchers, painting skate decks, painting pets, making resin earrings, pom pom keychains, making cactus rock planters, Halloween styled soap, tape painting and much more. Classes are being held at Ipswich JetsThe Soul Nook Collective, Coffee Club Springfield and the Sip ‘n’ Dip studio at 98 Brisbane Tce
