Fernberg Walks Family Day Out offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty and historical significance of the Government House Estate. The 16.3-hectare Estate, a protected green space in the heart of Brisbane on which Government House stands, has a long and fascinating history.

On April 15, visitors can experience this history firsthand by walking the newly opened bushland tracks — a network of scenic trails that wind through the Estate’s remnant native bushland; home to diverse native flora, fauna, and heritage landmarks, including century-old trees and remnants of early Brisbane’s development.

Through ongoing conservation efforts such as bush regeneration and sustainable landscape management, this precious green space remains a thriving sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors. Updated directional and informational panels will help guide visitors, providing insights into both the natural environment and the Estate’s historical legacy.

Additionally, Government House will be open to visitors throughout the event. Also known as Fernberg (German for distant mountain), Government House as served as the official residence and workplace of Queensland Governors since 1910, combining its role as a Vice-Regal residence with historical, cultural, and environmental significance as a heritage-listed landmark. The Estate's experienced and knowledgeable guides will be on hand to answer all your questions and explain the historical and cultural significance of the property.

Whether you’re interested in history, conservation, or simply enjoying a walk in nature, the Family Day Out offers something for everyone; ensuring that the Government House Estate remains a place where the past and present come together, and where visitors can gain a deeper appreciation of Queensland’s history and natural heritage.

Need to know - Walkers are encouraged to BYO water bottle for the walk, with refilling available at bubblers throughout the Estate. All visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and stay a while, or purchase some light snacks available from one of the onsite food vans.

Inspired by his walks through the suburbs surrounding Government House, this online publication explores the rich history, heritage, and natural beauty of Brisbane’s inner west. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the author and hear firsthand about the stories and places that have shaped this part of the city.
