Tygum Park
Waterford West
Tygum Park, a waterside park in Waterford West, is a drawcard for pirate-mad youngsters, bird-watchers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Overlooking a large lagoon, Tygum Park is an expansive grassy space with a decidedly nautical theme. The main playground looks very much like a pirate ship, complete with sails and flags. A second playground area continues the theme with a six-metre high climbing fort resembling a ship’s crow’s nest lookout. Other highlights include a skate park, half basketball court, covered picnic tables, electric barbecues and scooter/bike paths.
A large number of birds call the lagoon home and can easily be spotted down by the water’s edge. As well as healthy populations of ducks and swamphens, keen observers may even spy some more uncommon species, including the threatened Jabiru. While looking at the birds is encouraged, feeding them can threaten the water quality of the lagoon and is strictly off limits.
For those wanting to stretch the legs, a sealed path/boardwalk extends right around the lagoon. The 1.3km track is suitable for all ages and is bike and stroller friendly. Fitness stations can be found along the circuit for a bit of an extra workout.
Whilst in the area why not check out the fantastic local New Zealand-flavoured cafe Grandma's Kiwi Kitchen.
Nice to know - The Logan City Marine Modellers meet at the park on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and are well worth coming down to watch as they launch their miniature boats from the lagoon’s jetty. If you want to try it for yourself, keep an eye on the club’s Facebook page for details on their next open day.
Need to know - Tygum Park has plenty of parking and wheelchair-accessible toilets.
