Bellbird Lookout Walk

Binna Burra

This easy hike in the Binna Burra secion of Lamington Park has many vantage points to enjoy three stunning vistas. It’s a very rewarding walk and perfect for families.

Bellbird Lookout Walk is an easy 2 km bushwalk to an amazing lookout. Add another four kilometres to the hike to also view Koolanbilba and Yangahla Lookouts.

Binna Burra is one and a half hours drive from Brisbane and is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia Wilderness Area. The hike starts from the carpark below the camping area on Ships Stern circuit.

Enjoy the coolness and feel the humidity of the rainforest as you enter under the thick canopy of the rainforest. Keep an eye out for the abundant birdlife and wildlife that make their home in the forest.

The track is well formed and descends gently. After a while, a sign indicates a track to the left to visit Bellbird Lookout. Following this, the track leads you to a high clifftop that looks down Numinbah Valley and gives you a dramatic view of Ships Stern, Egg Rock and Turtle Rock.

There are no handrails at the lookouts on this walk so take care and supervise children closely.

Returning back to the main path you can either return the way you came, or continue a short distance to Koolanbilba Lookout. This lookout faces down the same valley with Ships Stern on your right and Beechmont to your left, but with a different perspective to Bellbird Lookout.

Continuing on as the track does a zig-zag, you will arrive at yet another amazing spot – Yangahla Lookout. Here it feels like you are walking out on a massive exposed rock hanging out over the edge.  Once again, care must be taken at all these lookouts as they are all unprotected and are very high.

After Yangahla Lookout, you return back the way you came.  Visit all three lookouts and you’ll complete approximately 6 km in total.

This walk also offers an interesting rainforest experience– you’ll see massive trees with buttress roots, epiphytes, strangler vines and much more. Birds are in abundance in Lamington National Park. Listen carefully and you’ll make out the songs of lyrebirds and bellbirds.
