Qpac

South Brisbane

Updated: Mar 08, 2025

Where once stood the open air Cremorne Theatre (c1921) and the Blue Moon Skating Rink by the river at South Bank, QPAC - Queensland’s sprawling premier performing arts centre - stands today. Built from the late 1970s onwards and opened in 1985 as a replacement to the demolished Her Majesty’s Opera House, its interconnected concrete boxes house three theatres of varying capacity, a concert hall, a small art gallery and theatrical museum as well as bars, cafes and a restaurant.

As the base for four of Queensland’s leading arts companies – the internationally-renowned Queensland Ballet Company, the superb Opera Queensland, Queensland Theatre Company and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, it is the spiritual home of the state’s performing arts.

Along with touring musicals, concerts, dance and opera, both national and international, the centre is also the venue for the splendid children’s Biennale Out of the Box arts festival.
