Milk Bar Cafe

Ashgrove

Updated: Sep 18, 2024

Go for a trip down memory lane at cute Milk Bar Cafe in Ashgrove, the likes of which have long disappeared from Brisbane’s streets.

Here malted milks (this is the home of the original), spider drinks, banana splits, sundaes, vintage cupcakes, cones of hot chips, old-fashioned burgers and toasted sandwiches are the order of the day - not just for the nostalgic but as a whole new-fangled cuisine for children who thought spiders were arachnids and the Beatles a bunch of insects.

Co-existing happily with the best of the past (including a mix of music from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles) is the best of today, with Merlo coffee, a thoroughly modern breakfast menu (including all-day options) and milkshakes flavours they could only have dreamt of back then, such as butterscotch, mango and lime and hazelnut.

And, in another unheard-of-in-the-1950’s twist, dogs are most welcome to join their owners at the outside terrace, which has a rail for securing them and is owned by Milk Bar Cafe itself. BYO water bowl.
