Palm Island and Our People
State Library of Queensland
Palm Island and Our People is a fascinating exhibition commemorating 100 years of Palm Island - past, present and future - showing at State Library of Queensland until April 22.
Palm Island's centenary is celebrated with a showcase of images, memorabilia and digital stories, providing a unique opportunity to reflect on the past through retelling and stories of resilience and self-determination.
Discover the difficult and complex history of this tropical paradise from the first placement of people to the island as an Aboriginal Reserve under the 'Protection Act'.
In addition, visitors can explore the importance of keeping culture alive to the Bwgcolman people through dance and language.
The State Library acknowledges the significant contribution of the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council and the Bwgcolman Indigenous Knowledge Centre in the development of this exhibition.
