Best Things To Do In Auchenflower

Updated: Jun 04, 2025

Auchenflower in Brisbane’s inner west is renowned for its sprawling ornate Queenslanders perched on steep narrow streets threading through its leafy hills but it is also home to some great restaurants, unique little bars, quaint croquet club and one of Brisbane’s spookiest villas.

The suburb’s name, which is Gaelic for ‘field of flowers’ comes from the family estate of Qld Premier Thomas McIlwraith, who built his grand imposing house (since demolished) there in 1880. Oddly, its billiard and ballrooms were salvaged and are now located in Tamborine Estate Winery

Here are some of the attractions of this inner western suburb:

Front Yard Bar is Brisbane's best kept secret - a charming rustic treehouse-style bar annexed to a residential house
Salud is a gorgeous cafe bar in an historic Auchenflower shop, serving up delectable food with a Latin American and Spanish flavour,
This glamorous bar is like a plush old world lounge in an English manor that has been beamed up onto Milton Rd
A perennial favourite with western suburbs diners, My Thai attract crowds to its ornately decorated Auchenflower worker's cottage
Haig Rd Bistro is a charming French bistro that brings a taste of Alsace to a colonial Auchenflower cottage
Peach Cafe is a charming cafe housed in a quaint Queenslander in Auchenflower offering all-day brunch
Four Sisters on Lang is a cute little Vietnamese street food café tucked away in an Auchenflower commercial estate
This corner store in Auchenflower has been given a new lease on life, with a delicious Greek twist
The quaint white and blue 1920s croquet club is still going strong as croquet enjoys a bit of a renaissance - a great place to spend a gentile afternoon with friends
Steamtrain Espresso Bar is a cool coffee nook in Auchenflower serving specialty coffee and all day breakfast fare
A hunting theme pervades this cosy rabbit warren of a bistro which offers a unique degustation menu
OK, you can’t actually ‘do’ Moorlands, but this grand gothic villa on the Wesley Hospital grounds overlooking the river was the home of the notorious Mayne family
