La Patrona Mexican Cuisine

Teneriffe

La Patrona Mexican Cuisine in Teneriffe takes Mexican dining in Brisbane to a whole new level of refinement.

Located within an exquisitely decorated split-level warehouse, La Patrona is the go-to for a true taste of Mexico in a setting to match.

Guests can take a seat on the pretty, light-festooned terrace out front or in the chic, main dining room upstairs, which has been decked out tastefully with traditional Mexican trinkets, and features a stunning mural on one wall.

The original industrial features have been softened by the decor, including lots of rustic timber, a golden bag-washed wall and hanging lights, while to one side there's an open kitchen window where you can see the chefs busily at work preparing the best Mexican food in Brisbane.

Everything on the menu comes highly recommended, with all dishes prepared from scratch, including the house speciality guacamole, with the avocado smashed fresh and mixed in an earthenware bowl at the table. Ceviche (lime cured prawns or gold band snapper) is divine.

The impressive selection of dishes to share includes the highly recommended ceviche (lime cured prawns or gold band snapper), Alitas de Pollo (chicken wings in strawberry chipotle glazed sauce), Elotes (street-style, char-grilled corn with lemon mayonnaise), Chiles Rellenos (agave-infused ancho chilli stuffed with traditional beef mince) or Chorizo and Potato Sopes (home-made corn tortilla, beans, chorizo & potato with chilli salsa and cream).

Must-try are the Taqeria de la Patrona (3 tacos) with a choice of beer-battered whiting, char-grilled achiote-marinated chicken, garlic mushroom and roasted corn or spit-grilled marinated pork infused with grilled pineapple and onion cilantro.

House favourites are equally as delectable and these are like mains for one (although they can be shared). Stand-outs include the Mole Poblano (chicken covered in traditional Mexican chocolate sauce, with refried beans and Mexican-style rice), Huachinango A La Veracruzana (Veracruz-style golden snapper braised with tomato, capers, olives, capsicum and rice) or Camarones a La Diabla (creamy chipotle prawns marinated in salsa brava, served with refried beans and rice). There's also an Aztec soup which is worth trying.

In addition, there's a small selection of salads (cactus, pumpkin or chipotle prawns), while for afters, La Patrona's sweets menu includes Tres Leches Cake (Mexican traditional moist vanilla "three cake"), Cajeta (baked caramel cheesecake) or cinnnamon and sugar churros with Mexican chocolate ganache and whipped cream.

The drinks menu is as first rate as the food, with a fabulous selection of bespoke cocktails including classic and La Patrona's premium margaritas, mojito, pina colada, bloody maria and charro negro. The wine list features some fantastic wines from Mexico's Guadalupe Valley (the perfect accompaniment to the food), as well as drops from Spain, Italy and Australia. Beer drinkers will find a small choice of Mexican beers and tequila fans will be in heaven with the excellent variety of tequilas available.
