Updated: Feb 13, 2024

The Elizabeth Picture Theatre is a luxury cinema in the heart of the Brisbane City, housed in the heritage-listed, former Irish Club known as Tara House (1919-2015).

The ornate, Richard Gailey-designed warehouse built in 1879, has been given a new lease of life as the Elizabeth Picture Theatre, bringing back the days of when going to the movies in the city was a glamorous affair.

The facade features simple classical detailing, while the stunning interior includes silky oak panelled walls, an arched ceiling adorned with angels, harps and gold-leaf Australian floral motifs, and leadlight panels in Brisbane's most glamourous "candy" bar.

The five-theatre complex features a main 150 seat theatre in the ballroom, keeping its beautiful features, along with four other cinemas ranging in size from 22 seats to 57. The cinemas screen a mix of art house and main stream movies including new releases and cult classics.

Movie-goers can enjoy a film in the premium Royal Rooms, with luxurious reclining armchairs and a full food and drinks service to your ultra-comfortable seat. The menu includes a range of movie snacks, from beer battered onion rings and dagwood dogs, to salt and pepper squid, assorted arrancini and karaage chicken; while sweet tooths can choose from churros or warm chocolate brownies with ice-cream, and hokey pockey sundaes topped with chocolate sauce, honeycomb pieces and whipped cream.
