God's Acre

Archerfield

Updated: Mar 21, 2020

This tiny speck of a burial ground was started as a family plot after a tragedy in 1859, and when Archerfield Airport was established in 1929 it was preserved and incorporated into the airport precinct.

The original owners of the land Thomas Grenier and his wife lost their son Volney at the age of 16 in 1859 when he fell from his horse during a fox hunt that he had been reluctant to take part in. Overcome with grief, they buried him on three quarters an acre they’d set aside and called it God’s Acre.

Other members of the pioneer family and neighbours went on to be buried here and the last person interred was descendent Olive Grenier who was buried here in 1980.
