Newmarket Brickworks Chimney

Alderley

This lone striking 50m tower, c1912 stands sentry in the back streets of Alderley behind the Newmarket Pool, the only remnant of the brickworks which once struggled to survive here in a timber dominated building market.

As a rare example of a load bearing chimney stack it was allowed to survive when the Brisbane Brick company was demolished in 1987. Having been set up by a frustrated group of builders and architects who couldn’t find good quality bricks nearby, and using the efficient Austain Hoffman method of brick making, it went on to supply brick to the Uni of Qld. During the war it was occupied by the Defence Force to make supplies of uniforms and other army equipment.
