Bulolo Flats

Fortitude Valley

Updated: Mar 08, 2025

This brick Romanesque 2 storey building whose insides have seen better days, was built in 1934 at the behest of TC Beirne as a form of ‘safe’ accommodation for the girls who worked in his department store on Brunswick St.

At the time it was remarkable not just for being one of few such accommodations built for young women, but for the design of the 8 flatettes which, while essentially bedsits, each had their own bathroom and kitchenette.

It was typical of devout catholic and benevolent employer and businessman TC Beirne to look after his employees in such a way at a time when working conditions for many were poor.
