Jarjum Stories

State Library of Queensland

STATE LIBRARY OF QUEENSLAND HAS CLOSED TEMPORARILY DUE TO GOVERNMENT COVID-19 REGULATIONS.

Jarjum Stories is a fantastic celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s books and storytelling at the State Library of Queensland from October 19 to May 10.

Here's a chance to revisit childhood favourites including The Rainbow Serpent, Stradbroke Dreamtime and The Legends of Moonie Jarl as well as taking a rare look at some of the earliest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s books published in Queensland.

The role of storytelling in sharing language, cultural knowledge and moral lessons across generations is highlighted in this colourful showcase, which can be enjoyed by all ages.

Visitors can see the world through the eyes of a jarjum in the exploration of stories created with children across Queensland including a bilingual Yugambeh story book and experience The Very Hungry Caterpillar through its many translations into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Need to know - Throughout the showcase period, you can join in special Reading Nook activities capturing the imagination of children and adults alike.
