Code Breakers: Women in Games

The Workshops Rail Museum

Code Breakers: Women in Games is a new exhibition celebrating the achievements of women in the gaming sector at The Workshops Rail Museum.

On loan from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the exhibition explores women’s emerging role in video game development, and includes games written and designed by Australian and New Zealand women, and shares their personal experiences from within the industry.

With ten games on display, the exhibition is a great way for visitors to immerse themselves into different worlds and to play the games these women have worked on, contributing as directors, programmers, developers, artists, writers, producers and designers.

Everyone, from beginners to advanced players, can try playing and learn about the science and the women behind the game along the way. From platformers, role playing games (RPGs), and digital board games, to graphical adventures and puzzlers, visitors will find games of all skill levels and interests.

Alongside the fun, Code Breakers: Women in Games ponders important questions in a post Gamergate landscape: how do women carve a path in an industry that has historically been male dominated, and how do we encourage diversity?

Queensland Museum CEO Dr Jim Thompson said,"With two-thirds of Australians now playing video games, we are excited to be hosting Code Breakers: Women in Games, celebrating the achievements of women in a previously male-dominated industry."

“Ipswich, as a community, understands the importance of investing in technological innovation and entrepreneurship and Code Breakers will appeal to those who are engaged in conversations aimed at breaking down barriers and improving opportunities for future generations.”
