Ghost Tours

Ipswich Cemetery

One of Ipswich's spookiest historic sites, Ipswich Cemetery is the place to take a fascinating ghost tour under the cover of darkness.

Those who grew up in Ipswich considered “spook hunting” a great weekend pastime, with one of the most spine-tingling places the Old Ipswich Cemetery. Located on the edge of town, opposite a former mental asylum, this 150 year old graveyard is the final resting place for hundreds of pioneers and their descendants.

One of its most famous inhabitants is Dan Kelly (alias James Ryan), brother of Ned, who was captured and executed in the same year as the famous Glenrowan shoot-out. Dan Kelly was thought to have made his way to Queensland with fellow gang member Steve Hart, after escaping Ann Jones' burning hotel on that night in Glenrowan.  After many years living in various places around Ipswich, Brisbane and Fairney, Dan was decapitated and killed by a coal train one night in 1948 as he wandered in the darkness along the railway line in the vicinity of Wharf St.

As well as Dan Kelly's grave, the walking tour takes in the many other haunted sites with 13 spine-chilling tales in Ipswich Cemetery.
