Playhouse QPAC
Two cultures come together in breathtaking fashion as the dazzling Chinese-Australian dance production of Matrix takes to the stage at QPAC Playhouse from Nov 13-Nov 16.
A joint production by Queensland’s Expressions Dance Company and BeijingDance/LDTX, the Matrix double bill features 20 dancers from two countries, overcoming language barriers and differences in artistic sensibilities, to produce two breathtaking – and hugely contrasting – dance works by leading choreographers Stephanie Lake and MA Bo.
The result of a six-week collaboration in Beijing, Matrix sees six EDC dancers joined on stage by the 14-strong company of LDTX, creating a wildly ambitious and dazzling display of dance virtuosity.
EDC artistic director, Amy Hollingsworth, said Matrix featured two very different works, showcasing the contrasting styles of the choreographers and the versatility of the dancers. “MA Bo’s piece is an emotional, intricate, undulating work with powerful imagery and evolving textures. Stephanie’s piece is a delicious dichotomy of hyper-physical yet incredibly detailed movement. It is sophisticated in both rhythm and structure,” she said.
