A Taste of Brisbane: Food & Art

Museum of Brisbane

Explore the history and culture of food in Brisbane with the Museum of Brisbane's fascinating online exhibition, A Taste of Brisbane: Food & Art

During the COVID lock-down, we saw people around the globe bake their own bread, bulk buy groceries and grow their own vegetables. As international borders shut, there was a rally of support for local businesses, and a move to avoid crowded supermarkets. More and more people became conscious of how and where their food was produced, and the waste that it contributes to.

What better time than now to explore the work of these 3 Brisbane-based artists who work with food as subject matter and inspiration: Carol McGregor, Marian Drew and Sean Rafferty.

Food has been a source of artistic inspiration for centuries, traditionally represented in still life paintings with fresh produce carefully arranged within domestic settings. The still life tradition continues to flourish and is reinterpreted by contemporary artists who have added their own experiences to the genre, often experimenting with their work.

Be inspired by the artworks featured from the Museum's collection and create a still life drawing or painting of your own. Try crafting a still life collection from physical objects in your home, or create a collage by cutting out images from old magazines. Don't forget to share your still life images with MoB using #MoBStillLifeChallenge and @museumofbrisbane.
