I Am My Own Wife
Qut Gardens Theatre
I Am My Own Wife is the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by Doug Wright, playing at QUT Gardens Theatre on October 3 and 4.
This powerful and thought-provoking piece of theatre, tells the tale of transgender woman Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who against all odds survived a violent childhood and 50 years of oppression under the Nazis and the Communists, only to emerge as a queer pride symbol in post-war Germany.
Playwright Doug Wright spent hundreds of hours interviewing Charlotte, delving into her incredible and almost unbelievable life, resulting in this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play.
Ben Gerrard, most recently seen in Bell Shakespeare's The Misanthrope and the tele-series Molly, reprises his award-winning role as the elegant and eccentric Charlotte in this mesmerising one-man show directed by Shaun Rennie (RENT, The View UpStairs).
In the one man tour de force, Ben effortlessly transitions through almost 30 characters over 90 minutes to piece together Charlotte's enthralling life story.
I Am My Own Wife is ultimately a play about strength and the refusal to be marginalised or silenced. It asks the audience to reconsider preconceived ideas and continue the social conversation surrounding the transgender community in contemporary society.
