Hono Grill is a flame-grill Japanese restaurant that takes inspiration from Japan’s kushi yaki bars, perched on a corner of Milton's Park Road dining precinct.
The spacious open-sided eatery has at its heart the kitchen where customers can watch their food being cooked over a flame grill and a roomy covered terrace, which is also great for people watching.
The menu at Hono Grill showcases the simplicity of charcoal-grilled skewers, which are expertly cooked using top quality produce and ingredients. Despite the casual vibe, all of the food is served on beautiful bespoke stone and ceramic dishes.
The range of delectable skewers includes chicken thigh & shallot; MB9+ Wagyu skewer; pork belly; octopus; mushroom or salmon; as well as quail egg; bacon-wrapped enoki and curry wagyu.
Skewers aren't the only dishes worth trying at Hono, with a selection of other Japanese faves such as chicken karaage bao buns, gyoza, wagyu tataki and salmon carpaccio.
There's also finger lime oysters and king prawn or oyster mushroom kushi katsu, garlic butter scallops, fried spicy eggplant, chargrilled lamb cutlets and grilled onigiri (charcoal toasted rice with yakitori glaze) while sides include yuzu mayo slaw, sweet potato fries and charred corn with honey butter glaze.
From the drinks menu there's a carefully curated selection of sake, shochu, and Japanese beer as well as Strangelove Yuzu Soda, Capi lemonade, apple and orange juice and a couple of standard soft drinks.
Open for lunch, Hono offers an affordable selection of dishes such as Zangi baos & fries; teriyaki salmon or chicken meatball donburi; crispy fried calamari salad; and chargrilled chicken with fried noodles.
Good to know - The outdoor covered terrace is dog friendly, with well-behaved pooches welcome to join their owners and bowls of water provided. Takeaway is also available.
Need to know - Ordering is done via QR code at the table. There is limited onstreet parking available on Park Rd and adjoining Railway Tce.
