Institute Of Modern Art

Fortitude Valley

Updated: Feb 02, 2025

A minimalist space of high creativity tucked under and behind the Judith Wright Centre, the IMA - one of Australia’s earliest established contemporary art spaces - is easily passed by or overlooked.

Yet it’s always worth popping in, as although you never know what you will find, it is guaranteed to be at the least offbeat and at the most confronting. From 1960’s mirror art featuring work by Yoko Ono to the surrealist at times macabre installations of Peter Madden to video montages of early 20th century hard labour, the director works closely with the artists and keeps the multimedia works churning out.
