New Bollywood: Currents in India Cinema showcases a cross-pollination of India’s mainstream (Bollywood), regional and independent cinema. Rapid social changes in contemporary India has sparked a resurgence in independent filmmaking with new, dynamic movies challenging India’s traditional social values.
Award-winning indie films such as the cheeky comedy Newton (2017) and dreamy comedy-drama Hotel Salvation (2016) feature alongside new Bollywood films Kapoor and Sons (2016) and Queen (2014) in this fascinating film program; while a must-see movie is the controversial love story and sleeper hit Sairat (2016).
Contemporary Mellow Dramas explores a style of filmmaking in which small human interactions are woven into insightful portraits of contemporary life. Featuring internationally-acclaimed films from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, these films are characterised as intimate dramas - linked more by mood or feeling than by narrative or subject matter.
The filmmakers behind these mellow dramas include acclaimed veterans Hong Sang-soo, Ann Hui and recent Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Koreeda, along with emerging directors Yang Mingming, Yui Kiyohara and Jeon Go-Woon.
