King Island

Wellington Point

Updated: Mar 28, 2024

This unique sea walk is strictly a low tide affair, when a sand causeway between tiny mangrove encircled King Island and mainland Wellington Point emerges as a natural bridge for walkers.

Interestingly the little 1 ha islet, which is now a Conservation Park was inhabited for health reasons by the Philips family between 1904 and 1906 when they erected a temporary dwelling on a sand dune. A letter from Mr Philips to his sister Jo is in the possession of the Wynnum Manly historical society, depicting their life during the brief sojourn on the island.

The 2km return walk, suitable for all ages – especially children who can paddle along the way, search for crabs and spot wader birds - is also a popular haunt of dog walkers during weekdays when dogs are allowed en route on leash.

Good to know - Refuel before or after with the area's best eateries - Citron Bayside and Wellington Point Farmhouse.

Need to know - While no shoes are required, this is a very exposed walk sun-wise, requiring extra care with sun protection.
