Frogs Hollow

Cbd

In the convict days the area down in the vicinity of Alice St was a mangrove swamp known as Frog’s Hollow, through which a small creek ran on its way to the Alice St Ferry. It is thought that the first ‘bridge’ in the colony was little more than a plank of wood over which convicts crossed the creek on their way to the farm where the City Botanic Gardens are today.

The Frogs Hollow sculpture, which is in a passageway of the Port Office Building, is thought to be roughly the spot where this bridge was located.

Later in the 19th century and early 20th century the area was the grungy red light warehouse district which retained the name of Frogs Hollow.
