The much-loved Malaysian restaurant Uncle Lai’s has relocated, bringing a taste of Malaysia to Greenslopes with its classic hawker dishes, commonly found on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Uncle Lai's, Greenslopes

Inspired by street food stalls found all over Malaysia, this little eatery offers authentic Malay fare from snacks like fried spring rolls and wontons, to beef rendang with rice and the national dish of Malaysia - nasi lemak (coconut rice served with chicken curry, crispy anchovies, cucumber, hard-boiled egg, peanuts and sambal sauce).

In addition, there are soups - meatball noodle soup and curry laksa - but the most popular dishes on the menu are noodles, cooked in a very hot smoky wok known as wok hei or breath of the wok. Try Wat Tan Hor, Hokkien Mee or Uncle Lai’s signature dish Char Kuey Teow (CKT) - spicy, wok-fried flat rice noodles with Chinese sausage, squid, chicken and prawns.

For a truly authentic Malaysian experience, order a kopio - strong black coffee with sugar served in traditional ceramic cups found in kopitiams (Malaysian coffee shops), or a refreshing citrus-flavoured Kickapoo Joy Juice soft drink.

Uncle Lai’s Mt Gravatt

From the distinct taste of Malaysia's Char Kuey Teow to exploring fresh and tantalising flavours, it's easy to see why Uncle Lai's is so popular. Reservations are recommended. Takeaway is also available.
