Mas & Miek Ceramic House
Newstead
Mas & Miek Ceramic House is a bespoke open plan ceramic studio, shop and café, hidden within the industrial surrounds of Byres Street, Newstead.
The expansive interior of the ceramic house provides a comforting and relaxed environment, with the calming studio perfect for encouraging those creative juices to flow, or simply to wind down with a coffee before work.
Mas & Miek café is located at the front of the studio, with lounge and table seating available. Diners can sip on a quality Fonzie Abbott coffee, which is served in a beautifully handcrafted ceramic mug, otherwise takeaway coffee is also available. The café also serves BNE Soda and HRVST juices (the owners ensure that all of their drinks are locally produced).
There is also a mezzanine level for café dining, allowing diners to observe the happenings of the studio from above, or to chill out with a book from the in-store library. Meanwhile, just inside the shop front visitors can browse and purchase unique handcrafted ceramics in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Of course, Mas & Miek’s specialty is getting their hands dirty with clay – the studio offers workshops, classes, masterclasses and studio sessions. The studio is divided into two clay work stations – one is for hand building (clay moulding by hand) and one for throwing (on the pottery wheel).
The studio offers packaged classes to ensure you are well up to scratch before you start crafting on your own. It is recommended to purchase a two-pack for hand building, to ensure you are able to take home your creation. The first class will be spent hand building your ceramic, two weeks are then spent drying and firing, followed by a second class for glazing.
For throwing on the pottery wheel, three classes are recommended to achieve the best result and a piece to take home at the end. Classes can be purchased individually, in four packs, or ten packs.
And for the experts, there are also master classes available, while for those not wanting to get their hands dirty, there's the option to book in to simply paint a pre-made pot and take it home.
Need to know – There is a small carpark at the front of the studio, as well as limited paid street parking. *The cafe closes daily at 2pm.
Nice to know – The studio is owned and operated by a mother daughter duo who both have always had a keen interest in ceramics.
