Goleby's Basement

Ipswich

Goleby’s Basement might just be the coolest performance space in South East Qld, where New York meets Ipswich underground in a heritage-listed ex-saddlery.

The entry to Goleby’s Basement is off a side street in the historic Top of Town precinct, where the original city saddlery Goleby’s House is an ornate landmark.

The saddlery was founded in 1881 by Mr Goleby (who later became mayor of Ipswich) and its craftsmen were well-known in both Australia and England for their handcrafted collars, saddles and harnesses.

The basement was the saddlery workshop and it was here during World War II that fancy belts, leather cigarette cases and shoulder holsters were crafted for American airmen. At one time the basement was also used to manufacture Goleby’s range of bicycles – the “Moreton” and the “Moreton Star”.

Today Goleby’s Basement is a must visit if in Ipswich when a performance is being staged there, with outfits like the Anywhere Festival hosting its shows in this funky historic space.
