brisbane museums
From its humble beginnings in the 1800s the Queensland Museum today occupies a pivotal place as the centre for natural history, indigenous artefacts and curios such as Bert Hinkler’s plane, a World War I German tank and a dinosaur garden while downstairs the Sciencentre is a fantastic hands-on interactive experience for young and old.
Further along the river the Maritime Museum documents the fascinating river and seafaring side to Brisbane’s history while both of these are supplemented by a host of historical mini museums, many of which hold important collections and insights into Brisbane’s brief, tough and at times violent past, such as tyhe Museum of Brisbane.
For an alternative window into Queensland’s past and modern art history the main universities (UQ Art Museum and QUT Art Museum) both have impressive collections and ongoing exhibits.
